Welcome to our
Puppy Mill Education Page
Puppymills are a huge problem in the United States. If you are unclear of what a puppymill is take a look at the pictures below. They are sickening & REAL. This type of life for millions of poor unfortunate dogs are a reality everyday. For many dogs they are confined in conditions like this for their entire life until they are no longer able to breed (to make their capturers money) then they are killed. The dogs you see in these pictures are VERY lucky as they are being photographed because they were rescued. So many dogs do not hit the dog lottery & make it out alive.

How can you help? DO NOT EVER EVER EVER BUY A DOG/PUPPY FROM A PET STORE OR MARKET, OR SWAP MEET. THE DOGS YOU SEE ARE ADORABLE & CUTE. BUT THEY WERE BORN IN CONDITIONS LIKE THIS AND ARE 90% OF THE TIME VERY SICK & MOST DIE VERY SOON AFTER THEY GO TO THEIR NEW HOMES. PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THE PUPPY MILLERS BY BUYING THEIR PUPS FROM PET STORES...

Facts: Puppy mill puppies are usually inbred, although you get the "papers" to show they are not, anybody can fake an AKC pedigree. It is done everyday. How do you know the mother listed on that paper really is the puppy's mother?

Facts: Puppy mill puppies are deprived of mental stimulation from the moment they are born. They almost always have severe seperation anxiety, and are extremely difficult if not impossible to house train.

Facts: Puppy mill breeders (if you can call them that) do NOT test for genetic diseases, that would cut into their profits. Most puppy mill parents were born right there at the farm they are being imprisoned in. They are NEVER fed quality food, IF they are fed at all. Most puppy millers feed the pregnant mothers to increase puppy birth rate.

Fact: Most people who buy a puppy mill puppy have NO idea the conditions they are supporting. They are told a good story from the pet store owner, the most common one is "OH NO I ONLY buy puppies from USDA licensed breeders" & that sentence alone sells the puppy. Little do you know puppy mills ARE USDA breeders. The USDA simply does not have enough resorces to enforce their laws. So if someone says "USDA Licensed Breeder" RUN the other way. & give the pet store a peice of your mind on your way out.

Fact: alot of people who buy puppy mill puppies out of petstores know where they come from, but they feel so sorry for the puppy in the window that they "Cant leave them there" WAKE UP,, you buying that puppy just made more room for the pet store to go buy more puppies from puppy millers. You are NOT doing ANY animal any favors buy "saving the puppy in the store"

Fact: there are puppy mills in every state in the USA, BUT the most common states are midwest. Texas, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma.  If you ever drive through one of these states & see large tin buildings on the back of their property & maybe even a sign that says "Puppies For Sale" You can bet those buildings are hiding a horrific scene of hundreds of dogs being caged. & Im willing to bet the owner will make you leave before letting you see inside of those buildings.

Fact: there ARE laws against this, & the best way to enforce the laws is to check out the Puppy Lemon Laws in your state. California, & Florida are the safest places to buy a puppy because their laws are much more strict on the breeder. Alot of states have the laws in place but not all, do your homework when buying a puppy. Google: Puppy Lemon Laws. & see what you find.

Fact: ALL puppies are cute, they ALL grow up. So be sure you buy a puppy from a RESPONSIBLE breeder. What is a responsible breeder?

1) Genetically tests their dogs for heridetary diseases: this is NOT just an exam from their vet, this is actual Xrays taken of their Hips & Elbows. Board Certified Ophthamologists to certify the eyes of the parents. Conformation of these tests must be certified by a non biased company, such as Orthepedic Foundation For Animals www.offa.org  it is free to search the pedigrees of parent dogs there. If your puppy's parents are no where to be found on that website, chances are they are NOT tested, & the chances of your puppy developing life threatening & crippling diseases are pretty big.

2) A responsible breeder grooms their dogs on a regular bacis. They do not allow fleas, ticks, matting. They ensure proper healthy by yearly veterinary check ups, & teeth cleaning. The over all care for their breeding dogs should be no less than how you would care for your children.

3) Responsible breeders KNOW their lines, they do not buy just any dog out of the news paper & start breeding them. They buy from other responsible breeders who health test their dogs. This ensures generations of health tested & passed dogs. Why does this matter to you? It matters because the genetic make-up on the pedigree of your dog WILL directly result in the health of your puppy.

4) Responsible breeders ALWAYS give mental & physical stimulation for their dogs. They are treated as a pet or child. They give proper training, their dogs are always well behaved & if you didnt know anybetter you would just believe they are a pet. There should be NO difference between a "breeding dog" or a "Personal pet" they ALL should be treated with the utmost respect & care.

5) Responsible breeders DO NOT EVER breed several breeds at the same time. This is a HUGE red flag of a puppy mill. Responsible breeders know their breed inside & out, they know all there is to know about their breed. If they are breeding sooo many different breeds how on earth can they be so intuned to all of them?

6) Responsible breeders do NOT have more animals than they can care for.

7) Responsible breeders feed high quality dog food to ensure the health of the parents & their puppies. Grocery store dog food is NOT high quality & does not provide the nutrition a breeding dog NEEDS to produce healthy puppies.

8) Responsible breeders are welcoming to visitors, BUT do NOT confuse a breeder saying no visits at this time, usually this is for the protection of the puppies, Disease is brought in by visitors & can put the puppies that are too young for vaccinations in harms way. BUT you SHOULD be allowed to come pick up your puppy in person AT the breeders HOME. NOT at a local gas station. If the breeder doesnt allow you to come to their home you have to think "Are they hiding something"

Fact: This is not a rant & ramble of an "Animal Rights Activists" I actually cant stand PETA, BUT puppy mills are REAL & thriving.  If you take a look at the pictures in my photo album & feel nothing but disgust & sadness then PLEASE spread the word. I give permission to copy & paste this to ANY public forum, mass email, or bulleton. It takes average everyday people like you & me to spread the word.  Im just somebody who does NOT think that this is ok.. Do you?

The truck shown above is a Purina Bulk Order Truck heading to a puppymill in Missouri, I took a trip to Missour in March 2009 & drove through the Amish community & this is what I saw. These puppymills are hidden in plain sight.. PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU BUY YOUR PUPPY. PLEASE DO YOUR PART TO NOT ENCOURAGE PUPPY MILLS TO CONTINUE TO THRIVE IN AMERICA. THE MOMS & DADS TO THESE PUPPIES DO NOT DESERVE TO BE TREATED LIKE THIS.....
